coloring books (NOT!!)

The Sword of Martin the Warrior from the Redwall series
When my girls were tiny, I tried my best to prevent coloring books from entering the house but Grandmas (particularly one in particular) were always giving them to the girls and I gave up.

However, I have been pleasantly surprised in the past couple of years to find the girls would rather draw than color.

Recently, they watched How to Train Your Dragon. K had a coloring book for the movie that she received at a birthday party a couple of years ago. The girls got it out, not so that they could color it but so that they could use it as a reference for their own drawings!!

We've been reading Brian Jacques' Redwall series for several years now. K really gets into the series. Recently, we started watching the CBC production (based on the first three books) on Netflix. Tim found that there was a website related to the series and that it had coloring pages.

I printed them out for the girls. But they chose to make their own drawings.

Somehow (and I am not at all clear as to how), my girls choose to make their own illustrations rather than use coloring pages. What amazes me is that the girls do not find their own illustrations inferior in any way. I am so PROUD!! :)

And well you should be~ It's your encouragement that has them desiring their own art to someone else's rendition. A lifetime love because a mother chose to encourage early creativity and pride!
